Kybella treatment is a cutting-edge injectable that helps get rid of excess fat under the chin. Here at Le Reve Skincare & Laser Center in Fort Worth, TX, we’re proud to be one of the best clinics to offer this amazing new treatment. This treatment is FDA-approved and has shown to be effective in contouring necklines.
How Quickly Does Kybella Treatment Work?
Kybella treatment is made from synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a molecule that occurs naturally in our bodies and helps break down dietary fat. When injected into the submental area, the deoxycholic acid causes the destruction of fat cells. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat.
The number of treatments needed and the timing of these treatments will be determined by your individual injection schedule and response to treatment. Most patients see visible improvement as early as four weeks following their first injection.
Deoxycholic Acid
Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that helps with the digestion of fats. It is produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. When fat enters the small intestine, deoxycholic acid is released to help with the breakdown and absorption of fat. This process is known as emulsification.
By emulsifying fats, deoxycholic acid helps to break down large fat globules into smaller droplets that can be more easily absorbed by the body. In addition, deoxycholic acid also stimulates peristalsis, which is the wavelike contraction of muscles that helps push food through the digestive tract.
FDA Approval
Deoxycholic acid was approved by the FDA in 2015 as a treatment for localized fat reduction. This approval was based on several phases of clinical trials. In these studies, patients were treated with either subcutaneous injections or submental (under the chin) injections of deoxycholic acid every four to six weeks.
At twelve weeks, patients treated with deoxycholic acid showed significant reductions in localized fat compared to those who received placebo injections.
Consultation
During your consultation, we will discuss the following five topics:
1. Your Treatment Goals
First and foremost, we want to know what you’re hoping to achieve with your treatment. Do you want to get rid of all your double chin, or just improve its appearance? We will create a personalized treatment plan based on your unique goals and aesthetic concerns.
2. The Number of Treatments Needed
The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient depending on the amount and distribution of fat under the chin as well as the goals and expectations of the patient. In general, most patients will need between two and four treatments spaced about four weeks apart to see significant results.
3. Side Effects
This cosmetic injectable is considered a safe and effective treatment with minimal side effects. We will discuss all possible side effects so that you know what to expect after your treatment.
4. Medical History
Going over your medical history is crucial for several reasons. First, we need to make sure that the treatment is right for you and that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
Second, we need to know if you have had any previous facial surgery or injection, as this may affect where we’ll make injections. Third, we need to know if you have any medical conditions that might contraindicate the injections, such as an active infection in the treatment area.
5. New Treatment Areas
Kybella treatment is considered a permanent solution for fat cells in the chin, however, there is always a chance that new fat cells will appear in other areas of the neck. This is why it’s essential to come in for follow-up appointments so we can assess your progress and create a new treatment plan if necessary. Together, we can help you achieve your desired look and give you the confidence to show off your neckline.
Preparation
1. Avoid Wine
Alcohol, especially red wine, can increase swelling and bruising at the injection site, and may also increase the risk of side effects such as nausea and dizziness. Additionally, alcohol can interfere with the body’s natural ability to break down and absorb deoxycholic acid, making the treatment less effective. Therefore, if you are planning to receive treatment, it is best to avoid alcohol for at least a week beforehand.
2. Do Not Take Anti-Inflammatories
Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin for at least a week before your treatment. These medications can increase swelling and bruising at the injection site, which can make the treatment less effective. In addition, they can also increase the risk of complications, such as bleeding or infection.
3. Don’t Eat Garlic
Garlic can thin your blood, and you don’t want to risk bleeding during the injection process. In addition, garlic can also increase swelling and bruising, so it’s best to avoid it before and after your treatment.
4. Consider Taking Arnica
Arnica is a herbal remedy that helps to reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process. Not only does this reduce the risk of bruising, but it also helps to minimize the treatment time. Patients who take arnica before and after their treatments are likely to see better results.
Post-Treatment Care
Here are some of the things to avoid to ensure a successful recovery:
Vigorous Exercise
Exercise can interfere with recovery because it can cause swelling and bruising. The injectable is most effective when the area is not swollen or bruised. We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise for at least three to four days after treatment. Light exercise is permitted 24 hours after treatment but should be avoided in the treatment area.
Sun and Heat Exposure
Heat and sun exposure should be avoided for at least three days after injection. This is because heat and sun exposure can increase swelling and bruising in the treated area. Sun exposure can also cause hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) in the treated area. If you must be outdoors, be sure to wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect the treated area from sun exposure.
Steroids
You’ll need to avoid certain steroids after receiving treatments. Prednisone is one such steroid. Prednisone works by reducing inflammation and can be taken orally or injected. However, it can also cause the body to retain more water and salt, which can lead to swelling in the treated area. As a result, patients who take prednisone after treatment may experience swelling. Other steroids that should be avoided include dexamethasone and methylprednisolone.
High-Sodium Foods
Sodium can cause fluid retention, which can lead to swelling and bruising. In addition, high sodium foods can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb the deoxycholic acid, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. To avoid these problems, it is best to limit sodium intake for at least 48 hours after treatment.
Instead, focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Additionally, avoid high-sugar foods. Sugar can promote inflammation, which can also delay healing and lead to swelling and bruising.
Makeup and Skincare Products
Makeup can irritate the skin and cause swelling. In addition, certain makeup ingredients can actually increase the risk of bruising. For example, retinoids can thin the skin and make it more fragile, while salicylic acid can increase blood flow to the skin. If you’re planning on getting Kybella treatment, be sure to give your skin a break from makeup for a day or two afterward.
