Spider Veins: Available Treatment Options

spider veins

Spider veins are tiny, visible veins that rest on the surface of the skin. They are so small because they affect the smallest blood vessels in your body, known as the capillaries. These capillaries become widened because of the increased pressure on them from blood that is having trouble making its way back to the heart. This is usually due to a breakdown or weakening of the valves within these vessels that are supposed to keep blood from flowing backwards and pooling in the capillaries.

Sometimes called telangiectasias, spider veins create tiny circular patterns. They may start out light, but over the years, you will probably see them increase in size, visibility, and scope across your body. They most frequently attack your legs and occasionally your face. Tied to your genetics, they are also tied to inactivity, obesity, and some other unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Changing your lifestyle can sometimes help to clear up some of these spider veins. Our practitioner may recommend that you lose weight or that you start a new exercise program. He or she may also recommend that you wear compression stockings whenever possible to keep blood from pooling in the veins and capillaries.

However, if your spider veins are past the point where they could be helped by lifestyle changes alone, we do have some incredibly effective and easy treatments that can erase these veins from your legs permanently.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments are usually non-invasive treatments that are used for spider veins. If you have just noticed the beginnings of tiny blue or purple patterns on your legs, this treatment may be right for you. The laser energy will specifically target your venous walls. This will heat them up, causing them to die and close the veins. Your blood will be redirected to other healthier veins, and your problematic veins will gradually fade from your skin after a series of laser treatments.
